Yes and no. To answer this question we first need to explore what it means to change your voice.
Everyone’s voice is unique.
Everyone’s. There’s no twin voice out there, no “doppelganger” of vocal imprint. Forensic voice analysis is a legitimate evidence used in criminal cases. You can actually hear when Taylor Swift has a cameo in someone else’s song, the same with Dua Lipa. I bet you can also tell when your “loud friend” has entered the room without even turning around.
Our voices are singular and sometimes we like them and other times we want to change them. Some people want to speak differently, while others hate their singing voice and want to sound different when they sing.
It’s highly likely that you don’t like the sound of your own voice. Not a lot of people do. My vocal instructor at uni told me this, she was a theatre actress and was successful enough to be in a Europe tour of Cats!
I often hear myself singing and while sometimes I'm blown away, other times I'm just in quiet resign accepting that it is what it is. But I always remember the fact that it's pretty rare to enjoy hearing your own voice.
So in some respects we must simply adapt to the voice we have developed since birth. You cannot change your voice print in much the same way that you cannot change your finger print. You can paint your nails, wear rings, gloves, hand jewellery, and bracelets but none of these alter your finger print. While you can "dress your voice up" with various techniques altering your vocal placement (I'm sure you've seen the various viral impersonators on social media) you cannot alter your unique voice print.
How your voice is placed is an entirely different story. Vocal placement is what singing lessons and vocal coaching help with. Altering vocal placement is what impersonators are doing.
Here's how singing lessons impact your voice long term:
1. Singing lessons can help change your voice if you want it to be changed.
2. Singing lessons can help give you the tools to adjust your voice when required.
There are some people who become afraid to begin singing lessons scared that their voice will change permanently. How your voice sounds will NOT be irreversibly altered. What is learned through singing lessons is not permanent.
Singing accurate notes and never having to fluke one again, well that can be permanent! And ideally that’s the entire purpose of a singing lesson.
In summary to our question do singing lessons change your voice?:
- if by voice you mean how you produce sound, then yes singing lessons change your voice.
- if by voice you mean how it sounds, singing lessons help you alter everything about your voice but it won’t change what you were born with.
