I recently had a quick fire interview with Brigitte Duclos on ABC News Radio about some fast vocal tips for becoming a better singer. You can listen or read the transcript below:

As a vocal coach, can anyone sing?

Yes.

Can anyone sing well?

There's one factor that contributes to this: if someone is tone deaf then no. They won't be able to sing, but it is rare. Very rare.

Just say I am completely out of key and out of tune, how do you get me to sing properly?

I get people to really learn how to hear the note, and to isolate the note. When you're listening to songs you just try to, I guess, meld your voice with it so you can't really hear your voice. It's matching that well that you can't distinguish your voice from the singer.

Do [fa-la-la-la] exercises help?

So basically, to remove the mystery of singing, we sing from the human body. It's full of muscle. The vocal cords are muscle tissue and you're learning how to move them.

What's a good starter song for somebody who is learning to sing, is there a basic one where they keys aren't too high?

Usually I get people to pick the song that they want to learn. I get them to pick one that they know really well, because they're going to want to sing along to it, usually.

I give people different levels of songs to learn, but ones they choose.

I'm starting to have a little bit of faith that anyone can sing, unless you're tone deaf, which is very rare. Do you think our ABC singers have any hope going forward?!

Of course! Absolutely. Just learn the muscles.
