How long does it take to "get good" at singing?

This entirely depends on what is meant by good singing. By "good singing" do you mean, good like the world famous Freddie Mercuries, Adele's and Taylor Swift's, or do you mean, "I want to be good enough at singing in the shower so that my cat won't keep crying at me to stop"?

Whether your goal is to achieve minimal pet disturbance, or the much more high stakes audition and performance aspects, you can "get good" relatively quickly.

I firmly believe that it is in the understanding of the science of singing that one can relax into learning how to apply this knowledge.

Sing like a pro in the shower

I have found that it takes approximately 4 lessons, yes that’s only 2 hours, over the course of 4 weeks, to learn the strategies to sing a note. Note: These are strategies, this may or may not equate to sounding good (although your dog might appreciate your shower singing more at this stage).

IF you want to:

-          Never sing a wrong note again

-          Sing whatever song you desire

-          Understand everything there is about singing

Well then, firstly you’ve come to the right teacher. You will need a good coach, someone to meet you at your current knowledge level and introduce you to the concept that is using voice for singing. It does ultimately depend on what your voice can naturally do, but the majority of "singing things" can be learned.

Impress your pets with your singing

If you think (or have been told) that you can’t sing or hold a tune, you run out of breath all the time, and your voice sounds “ugly” then it will take a few years train your voice. In training your voice you are understanding the concepts of the science of singing, and are training your ear with the application of music theory.

If your only issue is “holding a tune” this can be remedied quite quickly, potentially within 6 months to a year. Again, it does depend on what your voice is capable of and what it defaults to, but if people are telling you that you have a nice voice you’re already halfway there.

In summary:

-          Learn how to pitch in 4 lessons (roughly 1 month)

-          Learn how to improve an already nice voice within a year

-          Learn everything and be a working singer/impress all of the people in under 5 years.

It takes dedication. The voice is an instrument after all.

We've just come off the back of the Olympics, you've just seen dozens of athletes in huddles with their coaches: they are great athletes, phenomenal, setting world records, but they still need a coach because they are still trying to achieve higher goals. Training on any instrument is no different. To be great you need great coaching.
